Measurement of Distance

In aviation, distances are mainly measured in nautical miles (NM) or Kilometres since they are directly related to the Earth’s latitude and longitude. Using nautical miles helps pilots and air traffic controllers navigate accurately over long distances.

Nautical Mile at the Equator

  • One nautical mile is the length of a meridian subtending an angle of 1 minute of arc at its centre of curvature.
  • At the Equator, the Earth’s curvature is maximum.
  • Highly curved lines require less distance per unit angle.
  • Therefore, the length of a nautical mile is minimum at the Equator.
  • 1 Nautical Mile at the Equator = 6,048 feet.

Nautical Mile at the Poles

  • One nautical mile is the length of a meridian subtending an angle of 1 minute of arc at its centre of curvature.
  • At the poles, the Earth’s curvature is minimum.
  • Less curved lines require greater distance per unit angle.
  • Therefore, the length of a nautical mile is maximum at the poles.
  • 1 Nautical Mile at the Poles = 6,108 feet.

Value of Nautical Mile

  • The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) defines one nautical mile as 1,852 metres.
  • The International Nautical Mile represents the average value of a nautical mile.
  • International Nautical Mile = 6,076.1 feet = 1,852 metres.
  • The Standard (Admiralty) Nautical Mile is commonly used for navigation calculations.
  • Standard Nautical Mile = 6,080 feet.

Circumference of the Earth in Nautical Miles

  • The distance from the Equator to either pole subtends 180° or 10,800 minutes of latitude.
  • The complete circumference of the Earth subtends 360° or 21,600 minutes.
  • One minute of latitude equals one nautical mile along all meridians.
  • One minute of longitude equals one nautical mile only along the Equator.
  • Therefore, the Earth’s circumference is approximately 21,600 nautical miles.

Kilometre and Statute Mile

  • The distance from the Equator to either pole is defined as 10,000 kilometres.
  • One kilometre is one ten-thousandth of this distance.
  • Accordingly, the Earth’s circumference is approximately 40,000 kilometres.
  • A statute mile is a unit of distance defined by law.
  • 1 Statute Mile = 5,280 feet.
