loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<h2>Maps Reading Technique<\/h2>\n<p>Aviation maps and charts are specialised maps used by pilots for safe and accurate navigation.They show important information such as airports, airways, terrain, obstacles, and navigation aids.Pilots use these charts to plan routes and monitor flight progress.<br \/>\nDifferent charts are available for visual (VFR) and instrument (IFR) flying. <\/p>\n<h3>Topographical Maps<\/h3>\n<p> <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ibexaviation.com\/page-show\/general-navigation\/g8-map-reading-technique-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Topographical maps and aeronautical charts are used for basic navigation.<\/li>\n<li>Topographical maps show both natural and man-made features.<\/li>\n<li>They are primarily used for visual map reading during visual navigation.<\/li>\n<li>Maps do not normally show radio navigation facilities.<\/li>\n<li>The coverage of a map is smaller than that of an aeronautical chart.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Aeronautical Charts<\/h3>\n<p> <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ibexaviation.com\/page-show\/general-navigation\/g8-map-reading-technique-3.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Aeronautical charts are used along with topographical maps for navigation.<\/li>\n<li>They depict radio navigation aids and established air routes.<\/li>\n<li>Charts are primarily used for radio and instrument navigation.<\/li>\n<li>Natural features such as coastlines are also shown.<\/li>\n<li>An aeronautical chart covers a much larger area than a map.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Contour Lines<\/h3>\n<p> <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ibexaviation.com\/page-show\/general-navigation\/g8-map-reading-technique-4.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The height of natural terrain above Mean Sea Level (MSL) is called <strong>Elevation<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Terrain elevation can be represented using:\n<ul>\n<li>Contour Lines<\/li>\n<li>Layer Tinting<\/li>\n<li>Spot Heights<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Contour Lines, Layer Tinting and Spot Heights<\/h3>\n<p> <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ibexaviation.com\/page-show\/general-navigation\/g8-map-reading-technique-5.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Contour lines join places of equal elevation (in feet or metres).<\/li>\n<li>Closely spaced contour lines indicate a steep slope.<\/li>\n<li>Widely spaced contour lines indicate a gentle slope.<\/li>\n<li>Layer tinting uses colours between contour lines to represent elevation.<\/li>\n<li>The colour legend is provided in the map margin.<\/li>\n<li>Prominent peaks are indicated by spot heights.<\/li>\n<li>Spot heights are normally shown inside white or yellow rectangles.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Maximum Elevation Figure (MEF)<\/h3>\n<p> <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ibexaviation.com\/page-show\/general-navigation\/g8-map-reading-technique-6.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Flight safety depends on accurate knowledge of terrain and obstacles.<\/li>\n<li>The Maximum Elevation Figure (MEF) indicates the highest obstacle within a map area.<\/li>\n<li>MEF is published for each half-degree or one-degree latitude\/longitude rectangle.<\/li>\n<li>Topographical maps provide MEF values.<\/li>\n<li>The printed MEF does not include an operational safety margin.<\/li>\n<li>The required safety margin must be added during flight planning.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Calculation of Maximum Elevation Figure<\/h3>\n<p> <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ibexaviation.com\/page-show\/general-navigation\/g8-map-reading-technique-7.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>MEF is calculated in three steps:<\/li>\n<li>Determine the highest natural feature and add <strong>300 feet<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>The additional 300 feet accounts for possible obstacles on hilltops.<\/li>\n<li>Determine the highest man-made obstacle.<\/li>\n<li>No additional allowance is added to accurately surveyed man-made obstacles.<\/li>\n<li>Round the final value up to the next hundred feet.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Minimum Safety Altitude (MSA)<\/h3>\n<p> <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ibexaviation.com\/page-show\/general-navigation\/g8-map-reading-technique-8.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Minimum Safety Altitude provides adequate terrain and obstacle clearance.<\/li>\n<li>MSA is calculated by adding a safety margin to the MEF.<\/li>\n<li>Aeronautical charts normally provide Minimum Safety Altitudes.<\/li>\n<li>The safety margin depends upon the MEF:<\/li>\n<li>For MEF below <strong>5,000 ft<\/strong>, add <strong>1,000 ft<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>For MEF above <strong>5,000 ft<\/strong>, add <strong>2,000 ft<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Map Colour Codes<\/h3>\n<p> <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ibexaviation.com\/page-show\/general-navigation\/g8-map-reading-technique-9.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Standard colours are used to represent different features.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Blue<\/strong> \u2013 Rivers, lakes and other water bodies.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Green<\/strong> \u2013 Forests and wooded areas.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Red<\/strong> \u2013 Roads and highways.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Black<\/strong> \u2013 Railways.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Yellow<\/strong> \u2013 Cities and built-up areas.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Map Reading Technique<\/h3>\n<p> <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ibexaviation.com\/page-show\/general-navigation\/g8-map-reading-technique-10.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Map-to-Ground Technique<\/strong> is used when the aircraft is close to the planned track.<\/li>\n<li>Read the map first and identify the corresponding ground features.<\/li>\n<li>When uncertain of position, use the <strong>Ground-to-Map Technique<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Identify prominent ground features first and locate them on the map.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Visual Check Points<\/h3>\n<p> <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ibexaviation.com\/page-show\/general-navigation\/g8-map-reading-technique-11.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Clearly visible checkpoints should be selected during flight planning.<\/li>\n<li>Large, unique and high-contrast landmarks are easiest to identify.<\/li>\n<li>Tall towers are easily visible but should not be used due to safety considerations.<\/li>\n<li>Natural features such as coastlines, lakes and hills make excellent checkpoints.<\/li>\n<li>Man-made features such as towns, road intersections and railway crossings are useful.<\/li>\n<li>Airfields and marine beacons also serve as reliable visual checkpoints.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Visual Navigation Hazards<\/h3>\n<p> <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ibexaviation.com\/page-show\/general-navigation\/g8-map-reading-technique-12.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Weather and terrain can significantly affect visual navigation.<\/li>\n<li>Checkpoints may be scarce in deserts, jungles and snow-covered terrain.<\/li>\n<li>Judging distance and height becomes difficult in certain landscapes.<\/li>\n<li>Blowing snow may create <strong>white-out<\/strong> conditions where the sky and ground merge.<\/li>\n<li>Snow, desert and water surfaces provide poor visual references.<\/li>\n<li>Night flights over the sea can lead to spatial disorientation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Visual Navigation Techniques<\/h3>\n<p> <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ibexaviation.com\/page-show\/general-navigation\/g8-map-reading-technique-13.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Good pilot navigation depends on careful planning and chart preparation.<\/li>\n<li>Check and synchronize the compass before departure.<\/li>\n<li>Recheck the compass whenever heading is altered at turning points.<\/li>\n<li>Verify the altimeter setting and ensure adequate terrain clearance.<\/li>\n<li>Start or restart the stopwatch to monitor elapsed flight time.<\/li>\n<li>Use available navigation aids whenever position becomes uncertain.<\/li>\n<li>Monitor fuel state, aircraft systems and follow local lost procedures if required.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Unsure of Position<\/h3>\n<p> <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ibexaviation.com\/page-show\/general-navigation\/g8-map-reading-technique-14.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Immediately commence the local <strong>Lost Procedure<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Check the compass and airspeed indicator.<\/li>\n<li>Climb, if safe, to improve both visual and radio horizon.<\/li>\n<li>Use navigation aids such as <strong>VOR, DME, VDF<\/strong> and <strong>Radar<\/strong> to determine position.<\/li>\n<li>Calculate a <strong>Deduced Reckoning (DR)<\/strong> position from the last known fix.<\/li>\n<li>Use track, ground speed and elapsed time to determine the DR position.<\/li>\n<li>Draw a circle of uncertainty around the DR position.<\/li>\n<li>Use the Ground-to-Map technique to identify terrain features.<\/li>\n<li>Turn towards a prominent linear feature and follow it until reaching a positively identified position.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>General Map Symbols<\/h3>\n<p> <img decoding=\"async\"
