It ensures the aircraft follows the correct flight path and avoids collisions with other aircraft or obstacles. It also helps pilots reach their destination safely and efficiently, even in poor weather conditions.Aircraft headings, bearings, and runway numbers are based on these compass directions. A standardised system ensures accurate navigation and safe flight operations worldwide.<\/p>\n<h3>Shape of the Earth<\/h3>\n<p> <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ibexaviation.com\/page-show\/general-navigation\/g1-measurement-of-directions-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>This shape is called an <strong>Oblate Spheroid<\/strong> or <strong>Geoid<\/strong>, meaning &#8220;Earth-shaped.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>An Oblate Spheroid can be considered an imperfect sphere.<\/li>\n<li>It is spherical with slight flattening at the ends of rotation.<\/li>\n<li>The ends of the rotation (spin) axis are called the <strong>Poles<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>The flattening of the Earth at the poles is called <strong>Compression<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Compression Ratio<\/h3>\n<p> <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ibexaviation.com\/page-show\/general-navigation\/g1-measurement-of-directions-3.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The difference between the Equatorial and Polar diameters is approximately <strong>43 km (23 NM)<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>The compression of the Earth is expressed as the <strong>Compression
